Text Message Opt-In & Consent

Last updated: August 23, 2026

Nonprofit organizations use Donor Send to stay personally connected with their donors. When a donor opts in, the organization sends personal relationship messages — thank-yous, birthday and anniversary greetings, short video messages, event and ministry updates, and replies to the donor's own messages — from the organization's own dedicated phone number. This page documents exactly how donors opt in and the consent language they see, for every opt-in method an organization may use.

1. Text START to the organization's number

A donor can opt in at any time by texting START to the organization's texting number. The opt-in is recorded immediately in the organization's consent audit log, and the donor can reply STOP at any time to opt out or HELP for help.

2. Written consent on a donation or reply form

Organizations collect express written consent on their donation, pledge, and reply forms (online and paper) using the following required language, with the consent box unchecked by default — the donor must actively check it:

Providing a phone number alone — for example, on a payment form — is never treated as consent to receive texts.

3. Verbal consent, recorded by staff

A donor may give consent verbally — in person or by phone — at the donor's request. Staff use this disclosure when asking:

"Would you like to receive occasional personal text messages from us — things like thank-yous and birthday wishes, sometimes with a short video? Message and data rates may apply, message frequency varies, and you can reply STOP at any time to opt out. Saying no doesn't affect your giving in any way."

Staff record the donor's answer in Donor Send, which timestamps the consent event — who recorded it, when, and by which method — in an audit log the organization retains. Consent status is re-checked before every message is sent; donors who have not opted in are not sent texts.
